Local Music Friday: Just Joe

Many may know Joe Altier as one of the co-hosts of The Show, the morning drive time show on 94.9 KROCK in Central New York. Others may know Altier as the guy who delivers Love-o-Grams to unsuspecting recipients. Still others may know him as the frontman for the hard rock/metal bands Brand New Sin and Elephant Mountain. His frequent solo appearances at bars, restaurants, cafes, breweries, wineries, and various State Fair locations are probably how he is best known to CNY music fans. Those unaware of his musical prowess may know him from his inspirational fitness journey. To his fans, he’s Just Joe.

Truth be told, Joe Altier is all of these things and more. He is not Just Joe as his stage name indicates. He has been performing around Central New York and beyond for more than 20 years but the story began when his mom started to teach him piano when he was five years old.

Following his graduation from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, Altier made his way to the Sheffield Institute for the Recording Arts in Baltimore and decided music would be his career.

Soon after finishing up at the Sheffield Institute, he returned to Central New York and auditioned to be the singer for the hard rock/metal band Brand New Sin. He sang with Brand New Sin for seven years, touring the country with such metal legends as Motorhead, Type O Negative and Black Label Society. The band also received its biggest notoriety when they recorded the entrance song for WWE wrestler The Big Show.

Even throughout the pandemic, Altier has remained one of CNY’s hardest working musicians. He has adopted Twitch as his streaming platform of choice and goes live at various times throughout the week. He has also continued his long-running Facebook series “Tuneage” where he performs cover songs that range from Elton John to Dio, much like he does in his solo sets. If there’s one word to describe Altier, it’s eclectic.

Altier released his first song of original material in five years back in May, a song called “In Its Time” that reflects the times we’re now in. Check it out below.

You can catch Just Joe live on his Twitch channel nearly every day and with the lifting of some restrictions, he’s now getting out into the live environment again. Altier performs tonight (July 17) from 6-8 p.m. at Villa Verona Winery in Verona, JT’s Creamery and Cafe in Liverpool on July 30 at 4:00 p.m., Brian’s Landing at Green Lakes in Fayetteville on Aug. 1 at 6:00 p.m. and Heritage Hill Brewhouse and Kitchen in Pompey on Aug. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
