Live: Pentatonix at St. Joseph’s Amphitheater at Lakeview August 24th, 2023
Thursday August 24th, Pentatonix took the stage at St. Joseph’s Amphitheater at Lakeview following a terrific set from American singer-songwriter Lauren Alaina. Pentatonix is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Matt Sallee, and Kevin Olusola. Pentatonix formed in 2011, and has created an impressive collection of music including 11 studio albums, five compilation albums, and six EP’s.
Pentatonix emerged from the darkness, lit with only a few beams of light belting out the ever popular single “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, followed by two original compositions: I Rise and Can’t Sleep Love. Using nothing but their voices, the Pentatonix delivered a captivating performance that included thoughtful harmonies, matched with creative visuals and clever choreography, breathing new life into both modern and classic hits.
Some highlights were when Lauren Alaina was invited back on stage to accompany the Pentatonix, bringing her country flair to the classic “Jolene” by Dolly Parton, and when Beatboxer Kevin brought his electric cello on stage to do a beat-box rendition of a classic Bach cello piece. There were plenty of iconic songs to sing along to, and the 90’s dance medley was perfectly nostalgic. They finished out the set with one of my personal favorite songs, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.
During the encore Pentatonix brought things down with an emotional cover of “My Heart With You” by The Rescues before ending with a bang, belting out “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. I couldn’t ask for anything
