In 2018, Dropkick Murphys was a last minute Chevy Court fill-in for Dickey Betts, who suffered a mild stroke and was unable to perform. Singer Ken Casey announced at the 2018 performance that it was the band\u2019s first state fair appearance. The Boston-based Celtic punk rock band drew\u00a0 a crowd of 13,000 in 2018. This year, they more than doubled that with an estimated 30,200 in attendance. Casey joked that, \u201cWe played here last year as a last-minute addition. They invited us back this year. I can tell you, we don\u2019t get invited back too many places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-321681\" src=\"https:\/\/newyorksmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/08\/Chris-Besaw-DKM-NYSF-2019-15-of-21-157x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"210\" data-wp-pid=\"321681\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-321670\" src=\"https:\/\/newyorksmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/08\/Chris-Besaw-DKM-NYSF-2019-4-of-21-162x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"210\" data-wp-pid=\"321670\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Singers Al Barr and Ken Casey traded vocals throughout the evening as they ran back and forth across the stage, getting the crowd amped up. They brought along their traditional entourage of back-up sounds that included an accordion, banjo, keyboard and of course the bagpipes. All punk music should have bagpipes! The Dropkicks played a nice mix of fan favorites and rebel rousing tunes including, \u201cThe Boys Are Back,\u201d \u201cThe State of Massachusetts,\u201d &#8220;Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya,\u201d \u201cFirst Class Loser\u201d and their spin on the traditional Irish song \u201cBlack Velvet Band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-321685\" src=\"https:\/\/newyorksmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/08\/Chris-Besaw-DKM-NYSF-2019-19-of-21-283x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"210\" data-wp-pid=\"321685\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-321678\" src=\"https:\/\/newyorksmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/08\/Chris-Besaw-DKM-NYSF-2019-12-of-21-155x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"210\" data-wp-pid=\"321678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Dropkicks ripped through 23 songs and kept the crowd on their feet and bouncing along to the music. A quick poll of the audience determined there were many first-time attendees. The band ended their main set with the inspirational union track \u201cWorker\u2019s Song\u201d before coming back to finish off the night. For the encore, Ken Casey let the crowd sing along to the catchy hit \u201cRose Tattoo.\u201d They rounded out the evening with \u201cUntil the Next Time\u201d and ended with their biggest sing along hit, \u201cI\u2019m Shipping Up to Boston.\u201d\u00a0 Singers Casey and Barr ran through the crowd high-fiving fans and inviting them to sing along.
